Have you taken advantage of $20k instant asset deductions this EOFY?

The $20,000 instant asset write-off presents a valuable opportunity for dental practices to invest in essential equipment and technology. With the deadline approaching on30 June 2025, it's imperative to understand how to leverage this incentive effectively.

How the Incentive Works

Eligible businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $10 million can immediately deduct the business portion of the cost of assets less than $20,000. This applies to multiple assets, provided each individual asset is below the threshold. Assets must be first used or installed ready for use by 30 June 2025.

Unlike standard depreciation, this enables your business to deduct the entire cost in one year. It provides small and medium businesses with a significant cash-flow boost and makes the economics of capital investment much more feasible.

Will the Incentive be Back Next Financial Year?

The instant asset write-off incentive was not renewed in the recent budget for FY26. At this stage it seems definitive. While it is still possible for any future Government to renew the scheme after the election, that possibility remains unlikely.

Strategic Investment Opportunities

Investment in equipment not only improves patient care but can also contributes to operational efficiency and practice growth. Dental practices can utilise this write-off to acquire:

Digital imaging equipment
If you haven't already updated, modern digital x-ray equipment can help streamline your examinations and improve diagnostic accuracy. The latest imaging systems, such as the Carestream CS 2200 allow for higher image clarity with lower radiation exposure. If you're not already using an intraoral camera this is a must have to improve your workflow and patient experience. Units such as the Carestream CS 1500 deliver precise, true-to-life images with each and every shot. This provides the visual evidence you need to educate patients and make more accurate diagnoses.

CAD/CAM systems
Patients overwhelmingly prefer CAD/CAM procedures, especially intraoral scanners. Procedures that incorporate intraoral scanners instead of physical impressions are consistently rated as more comfortable. The Dexis IS 3700 is a great entry level option to consider. Designed with Studio Porsche, it delivers a high-performance scanning experience that takes you in any direction you want to go.

Surgical Instruments
This is a great time to review your small equipment asset register. New handpieces and motors are always welcome by clinicians to help them work safer and more efficiently. The NSK Surgic Pro+ delivers the highest performance and reliability in virtually all surgical procedures. For highspeed handpieces our personal favourite is the NSK Ti-Max Z800L. The mini head design offers the perfect mix of ergonomics and visibility without compromising on performance. To really differentiate your practice, consider introducing pain-free anaesthesia. The Ronvig Calaject system controls the flow rate, which ensures a smooth and gentle flow of anaesthesia.
